![]() WHAT IS AN AROID?Aroid is the common name for any plant in the Araceae family, also known as the arum family. Aroids are distinguished by a unique floral structure: countless tiny flowers are clustered on a fleshy spike known as a spadix, typically surrounded or enclosed by a modified leaf called a spathe. This striking combination called the inflorescence, often called a flower, is a hallmark of aroids.
BIODIVERSITY POWERHOUSE Araceae is one of the most diverse plant families in the world. Its members are found across the Neotropics, Paleotropics, and parts of North America and the Mediterranean. With over 4,500 described species—and many more yet to be discovered—aroids thrive in a wide range of environments, from rainforest canopies to swamps and even your own windowsills. DIVERSE GROWTH FORMS The family includes a wide range of growth habits: some grow from the forest floor, others climb trees or cling to rocks, and some are even aquatic This adaptability makes aroids a fascinating group for both scientific study and horticultural enjoyment. |
