Hello. I got your name and e-mail address from the Int'l Aroid Society
page on the internet. I need your assistance. I believe that I may have
stumbled upon a calla that is hardy in Indiana, zone 5.
I live on the SE side of Indianapolis, between Beech Grove and Wanamaker.
For the last 3 years or so, I have had what looks like a calla voluntarily
coming up in my garden. The plant has now doubled and has finally bloomed
(1 on each division) and I am almost certain that it is a calla. The
leaves are arrow shaped, white-spotted, point upward and are about 2 feet
tall. The bloom is a single creamy white petal that wraps around a yellow
stamen and stands about 3 feet tall. The bloom itself is about 6". It
looks just like the photo at http://www.premier.net/~chapman/calla2.jpg
except that it is white.
I believe that the plant 'piggy-backed' a ride into my garden with some
siberian iris, as it is growing amongst them. The plant is located about
15 feet from my house in my front yard. It has no winter or summer
protection from the elements. I have done nothing special to the soil
there with the exception of mulching it this year.
Are there callas that are hardy in Indianapolis? If not, how should I go
about propagating this one? Is there an Aroid specialist in the area that
might like to see it?
