what a day. friends and i had planned to go to wave hill today and the
weather did cooperate a bit. it was sunny for the most part although not as
nice as yesterday, which was sunny and most dry. today was hot and muggy but
it's august in nyc...
for those that don't know, wave hill is a former estate overlooking the
hudson river, happily ensconced in the bronx. deeded to to city a while ago,
it is now a nyc cultural institution. their gardens and greenhouses are
beautiful, well mantained and always interesting, although it's not a huge
property. we spent a great day watching the hudson river and the palisades
in new jersey, from under a pergola or lying around in the grass. they use
containers and baskets with lots of colorful foliage and blooms for great
effect.

the flower gardens are a riot. nothing subtle about it, they pack all sorts
of colorful flowers and foliage in such a small area to make such an
impact... at the greenhouses, wow... the small collection includes many
rather rare plants. among aroids, many of those beautiful silver-veined
anthurium, incl. crystallinum and clarinervium. also, a fantastic
wendlingeri-looking in bloom (the spadix and spathe however were dark in
color, instead of white, could it be something else besides wendlingeri?),
gracile, and a huge one with huge round corrugated leaves (i couldn't find a
tag for it though...). also, many Alocasias, Calladium lindenii and
humboldtii, Callopsis volkensii, some incredible Philodendron including
martiana... of non-aroids, a huge Tacca nivea, variegated Dichorisandras,
Dalechampia roezliana, rare ferns etc. at the water garden and monocot
garden, many more aroids.
a great place to visit, if you are in nyc, and not hard to get to by public
transport. the cafeteria has very good food and you can eat it looking out
into the new jersey palisades...
