The largest maybe 6-8 cm, and smaller ones are sometimes just below the surface, maybe 2-3 cm. I only disturb them when I need to dig a few to give someone, so they have been mostly left to themselves for more than 20 years in a couple of spots, and that seems to be the level they like. I don't know about the bulbifer - it's just the one, so I leave it alone.
