After watching the web page for several days and seeing little change, suddenly
last night (Thursday) there was an update saying "it's open!".
We headed off first thing this morning for Oklahoma City and arrived before
lunch, but alas, the spathe was already largely closed. (I told Cathy last
weekend it looked more like 4 or 5 days than the 8 they predicted, but then
didn't listen to myself, not having flowered any titanums personally ...) Still
very lovely, for an aroider, since although mostly closed it was not yet wilted
at all and some of the spathe interior was still visible, along with the
intricate ruffling and veining on the exterior. Total height was around 1 m or
a bit more.
According to the people there, the stench was not so bad as they'd been led to
expect and was more dead-fish than dead-elephant. They did attempt pollination,
but of course don't know yet if there will be any seed.
