 Usually terrestrial, sometimes epiphytic, creeping; stems elongate; cataphylls weathering to fine longitudinal fibers, ultimately deciduous; petioles 18-36(-40) cm long, weakly sulcate; blades 3-paned: moderately thin, leaflets sessile or on petiotules to 2 cm long; median leaflet more or less elliptic to ovate, 12-25 cm long, 4÷11 cm wide. obtuse at base. Inflorescence erect; peduncle ÷22 cm long, terete; spathe lanceolate or ovate, green becoming white or yellow, 4-6 cm long, 1.2-2.5 cm wide, rounded at base; spadix green to yellow, 3.7-5 cm long, 4-6 mm diam. at base; berries violet purple, globose to ovoid, with a short beak. The species occurs from Costa Rica to Ecuador at elevations from sea level to 500 m in tropical wet forest life zones. In Panama, the species is known only from 300 to 500 m north of Santa Fe in Veraguas, principally on the Atlantic slope.

Anthurium trisectum is a member of section Dactylophyllium and is distinguished by its usually terrestrial habit and thin, three-parted leaf blades with conspicuously impressed veins.
