IAS show & sale, September 18-19, 2010

Aroiders, some information on the IAS show, which is now just a few weeks
away. More will follow, stay tuned!
Certainly one of the highlights of our annual show is the Saturday night
banquet. For those of you who have never attended, we encourage you to
take the plunge. One thing about Fairchild is that it caters a delicious
dinner. Every year there are tantalizing foods as well as more familiar
fare, and always more than enough to fill the hungriest stomach. The other
fun aspect of the food is that IAS luminaries frequently dish it out to
you. It's nice to see them taking their proper place in the organization.
Following the banquet is another show highlight, the keynote address by
our featured speaker. This year Scott Mori of the New York Botanical
Garden will present an AV presentation and speak on "Aroids and
Neotropical Forests: Is There Hope for Their Future?" Given his experience
and the institutional depth of the NYBG, it's sure to be a fact-filled and
interesting presentation, and our lively and curious group will ensure
plenty of questions and comments from the audience.
If you are coming in from afar for the show, or happen to live near
Fairchild, plan on being at the banquet. We ask that attendees pay in
advance at the IAS website (it helps with the cash flow, you understand),
although registration and payment at the show is also acceptable. Be sure
to be there and sit by some of our fascinating members during the dinner.
We are a friendly, sociable group.

Dear Steve:
I clicked on the website you gave and saw some information on the Show
but saw no way to make a reservation for the banquet. I know I am
really dumb around websites. What am I missing?

Hello,
Thank you for the reminder, and more information.
I, as a newcomer, have a couple of questions. First, could somebody give me a brief outline of what this show looks like? What I am envisioning is, something like an annual flower show - but this banquet / speakers have me questioning my assumptions.
My second question basically follows the first - being deaf, I wonder if there are any resources for finding an interpreter for something like this? Being from Massachusetts, I have no idea how things like this are addressed in Florida, if at all. I'm just putting this out there that there is a possibility that somebody might know somebody, who might be interested in checking into this? I personally am perfectly comfortable communicating through pad and pen, but understandably, will not be able to get much out of the lectures/speaker presentations, so at this point, I'm thinking that if this is a "flower-show theme" - then I would come during the actual "show/sale" part of this show, where I can meet (vendors/members) one-on-one, as opposed to being in a platform-type setting where multiple conversations are going on within the group.
Sorry if this became long-winded, but I wanted to just check on this - It is, of course, my first IAS show, which I'm very excited about - and just wanted to see what it's all about.
Do people just come and go, or is this basically a show for only aroiders who are involved here? (Is it publicly advertised, in other words?)
Will certain people be bringing certain plants to sell, or is this more of a private member trade type of thing?
Again, I do apologize for the obvious new-ness of my questions. Have faith, I'm learning! :)
Best,
Jude

If you look just under the row of pictures, there's a line that says "The
2010 Show and Sale will be September 18th and 19th, 2010", and immediately
below that is a set of bullet points. The first one says "The Saturday
Banquet is still $25 - reserve your spots now." If you click on either the
word "banquet" or the phrase "reserve your spots" you should be taken to a
page where you can make reservations (using PayPal), or print a
reservation form which can be mailed to Albert with a check. PayPal is
faster and easier, of course.
There are also a lot of other "hot links" on the main show page - links to
the Fairchild home page, to a couple of the area hotels, and to pictures
from previous shows.
