Botanist Mike Madison

From: ExoticRainforest <Steve at ExoticRainforest.com> on 2010.02.10 at 17:52:32(20562)
Does anyone on this forum havecontact information for botanist Mike Madison?
I am trying without success to find a copy of Mike's A revision ofMonstera (Araceae) (Harvard University. Gray Herbarium. Thisjournal appears to be completely out of print with none available evenfrom used bookstores. Sinceit's the only paper of its type I would like to ask Mike if he would permit the IAS toconvert it to PDF format in order to make it available to aroidresearchers.
The Internet is filled with bad information on Monstera speciesand I frequently receive mail from people wanting to know the name ofthe plant that at least appears to be a Monstera. Were thisinformation to be available many of these questions could be answered.
The best information I can find is that Mike is involved in farmingsomewhere in California. If any of you have a copy you are willing topart with or have a contact e-mail or snail mail address please send mea private note at: Steve@ExoticRainforest.com
Thanks!

To stray a little from Aracae this reminds me of a similar case in the
1970s. One of the foremost, if not THE foremost Heliconia experts of
the
time (before John Kress and Fred Berry) was teaching botany at Hartwick
College in Oneonta, New York State. On two separate occasions he and I
made
field trips in Grenada. He had travelled all over the parts of Central
and
South America where heliconias occur, and told me that he thought
Grenada's
heliconias were evolving, because the two indigenous spp. found here, H.
caribaea and H. bihai, were freely hybridizing. This he had not
observed in
either neighbouring St. Vincent, nor in Trinidad.
Although he and I corresponded, after not having heard from him for a
long
time I discovered that no-one seemed to know where he was. Eventually I
was
told that he had dropped out of the botanical world and was making
furniture
!
Although I remember his first name was Robert, I am unable to recall his
surname.
John.

It is amazing that you have seen him. He was not only a botanist but a very good one trained at Harvard and had a very productive series
of years at Selby Gardens before he decided to get out of botany for financial reasons.

What I find interesting about the search for this guy, is that I have not heard of him, yet I have seen him several times at the Davis Farmer’s

Dear Christopher:
It is great that you made
contact with Mike Madison. He has an incredible background and it would be
nice to get him involved with Araceae again.

Howdy!
I got a hold of Mike yesterday. A really nice guy! he quit his
academic life to become a farmer. He has asked to be informed about the next
West Coast IAS meeting, and plans on attending.
Happy days!

Take a look at the early history of the IAS, especially the
early history of Aroideana. Mike is a prominent figure in the early days
of the IAS. Anything you can do on your end would be much appreciated.
I sent Mike a note on Saturday but so far no response.
