  Growth Media for Anthuriums
From: <pbunch at cox.net> on 2009.08.19 at 16:46:29(19752)
A friend of mine asked me what the best media are for florists Anthuriums. He recently visited a nursery where they use Oasis. I have never tried this but it sounds interesting.

Any comments on the use of chipped coconut husks? Not the finely ground coir.

Thanks,
Phil

Phil,

I can point you to a page that is important about using it and

an indepth discussion on an orchid forum.

Many people mistakenly think it is always bad/salty.

It does have to be cat-ion exchanged before you use it, but

that is easy enough. (epsom salt and calcium nitrate.)

Thanks Allison.

I have been using Epsom Salts and a high nitrate fertilizer for a couple of months now and all is well. The coir produced here in Colombia seems to be less salty than that from India and Sri Lanka. I also triple rinse it first. I started treating it because I was using it for Gesneriad seed sowing and did not want to take chances.

So far so good with Aroids.

I will let my friend know about the links.
