Hi, all!!

I was meandering through the floral section of our local supermarket the other day and happened upon the attached plant. Never having seen this one in real life before I thought I would ask the clerk what it was.

Clerk (reading generic label): That's easy. It's a 6" tropical foliage.
Me (trying to look patient): I already know that. I wanted to know what KIND of 6" tropical foliage.
Clerk (looking uneasy): Uh . . . I don't know . . . uh . . . GREEN?
Me (heaving great sigh): Thank you ever so much for your help. I'll take it.

Now someone please tell me what this 6" tropical foliage plant is. I know it's an aroid because of the flowers which you can barely see and which are completely closed. Is it a Homalomena or something like that?

Thanks much for your help.

Hi,

This plant is commonly known as Homalomena 'Emerald Gem' but I suspect it is
a species.

Sheldon:

Looks like Homalomena sp. 'Emerald Gem', an Aroid used for interiorscape
or houseplant purposes. It's been in the foliage industry for years. Go
on line to Agristarts IV, a tissue culture lab in Apopka Florida for
picture and culture info. No taxonomic information available though at
this site. Over the years quite a few Homalomena sp. have been tissue
cultured some with red petioles and or leaves.

Hi Peter,

What is red in this plant, that it's named "rubra"? Spathes?

Thanks much!!! I love the chain store plant policies. "Every plant must have a label!!" not that it actually means anything useful, or that it is even the right label. Only that every plant must have a label. Now I can put a real label on it.

Hi Marek,

It's the usual problem with many of the early names that were published for
a cultivated plant; the plant then in cultivation was selected for some
outstanding horticultural attribute (in the sae of H. rubra the leaves &
spathes were red) but in the wild the species ranges from poure green
through to pure red, even in the same population.

That's what I fight for!!! Every plant in any shop should have a label with
genus, species and/or cultivar name. It should be protected by the
international law. Just like all goods in shops must have a label with name,
ingredients, producer and barcode, plants may not be an exception from this
rule.

By label they mean a tag with: the bar code, the SKU number, the grower
number, the pot size (diameter in inches and centimeters plus volume of
pot in liters and quarts) and some generic care instructions such as
"water appropriately, place plant in location so that it recieves some
light and do not expose to freezing temperatures." What makes you think
a plant has to have a correct name on the label other than "deluxe
tropical house plant 10-inch"?

Yes, and a price!? I hate it when I look at a plant (or any store item) and the price is not on it.
