  Growth habit of Philodendron davidsonii
From: EGoldfluss at aol.com on 2007.06.24 at 06:49:38(15844)
My davidsonii has been creeping along quite nicely. It is about to
outgrow a 20" pot and I've heard it will climb if given something to do it
on. The question is would it prefer to climb?
Thanks,

Ed,

On page 428 of Dr. Croat's Annal's of the Missouri Botanical
Garden, volume 84, #3 Tom writes it is a epiphytic climber that occurs high
in the canopy. I'd say it prefers to climb!

Folks:

It is actually a true
epiphyte, often high up in trees.

I'm off tomorrow. I guess I'll be building a totem.
Many thanks.

You'll need more than a totem, a tree would be better. Leaves can be about 2 to 3 feet with a 3 inch stem. At least in Miami,Fl.

It will climb quite well, but as to whether
it prefers to climb or crawl accross the ground I can not tell you. I took a
piece of mine and placed it against the trunk of a medium sized live oak tree (1
foot diameter). It enveloped the trunk of the tree making numerous divisions of
itself up to about 6 feet off the ground. I do not know if it is still going
strong as I sold that house and downsized to a smaller home 3 years
ago.

The stem is now 2 inches and the leaves are about 2 feet. I grow on and
about my window sills so a tree won't do I can't get it into the bathtub to
water. I've been successful with hardware cloth and sphagnum
totems ranging from 3-4 inches in diameter and supported by plastic
coated metal stakes. Every few years I tip the big philos and start
again.
