  Trudy the Titan is Back
From: "Weaver, Bill" bill.weaver at hp.com> on 2006.07.31 at 23:28:59(14452)
After almost a year of dormancy, after last Julys blooming,
Trudy the titan is showing signs of life! As you can see
from the attached photo, the corm is not sprouting from
the same spot where it bloomed last year, but appears to
have started a new growing point right next to it. (I have
no idea if this is normal behavior or not) Any ideas?

Bill,

could you comment on the size and weight of Trudy?

>From the picture it looks like you "store" the tuber in a way that it is
not covered with substrate during dormancy.
I always thought that titan arum should be cultivated in slightly damp
soil, that means that the tuber should be covered.

Is the reason that you do it your way that the tuber can be observed
better?

Trudy was about 50 pounds when planted last year. I haven't
weighed it since then. Most of my aroids I keep in their pots
completely covered and slightly moist. Even though I use a very
loose mix of 2 parts pumice to 1 part potting soil I am a bit
paranoid about losing the titan so I vacuum the soil off the
top of the corm so I can check its condition and re-bury it
and start watering when it starts to sprout.

Bill,

thanks for the explanation!

I have not thought about soil vacuum cleaners, but it's a nice idea to
remove the top soil without the danger of hurting the tuber.

I fully understand your paranoia ;-)
My titan is far from 19 kg, but I am working on it.

Good growing,
Bernhard.

Can you imagine Bill getting a phone call at home?

"Is Bill there?"
"No, he's outside vacuuming his Titan"

This calls for a picture!
