From: "David Ruland" <druland at atlantabotanicalgarden.org> on 2004.07.08 at 18:32:09(11728)
Hello all, Is there anyone who can tell me what the weight record is for the largest cultivated titanum tuber from seed might be. Here at ABG ours weighs in right at 80lbs. and is going to flower soon.
Thanks, David Ruland

My notes show 100 lbs. at NYBG in June 1937 but check their web site to
verify; also, FTG had a 68-pounder in 2001...

David,

Although it is not clear from the information that I have seen so far as to
the origin of the plant, i.e. is it from seed or from a collected tuber, the
Amorphophallus titanum at the Bonn Botanic Garden per http://www.botanik.uni-
bonn.de/botgart/amorpho2003e.html (there is an annoying refresh bug in the
page code that will take you very quickly to their home page) was 78 Kg
(approximately 172 pounds) just before it bloomed last year. They have an
image of the tuber repotting at http://www.botanik.uni-

At Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, we recently repotted (Mr. Stinky) and
it weighed approximately 68 lbs. Our other titanum, Alice the Amorphophallus
still has a leaf up and we won't be able to weigh her for several months (after
the leaf goes down).
