What does one need permit wise for a small shipment of plants from SE Asia? This is not for commercial use, just for a collection and only about a dozen plants?
Thanks,
Eric Schmidt

Hi Eric,
go here
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ppq/permits/
Click on plants and Plant products, then Nursery products
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ppq/permits/plantproducts/nursery.html#faq
at the bottom is "how to apply"
Click on PPQ form 587, fill it out (do not put anything under US port or
ports of arrival unless you are carrying them in)
and fax or mail in.
I just faxed one in, we will see how it goes!

aieee! I also see where you can use form 597!
Form 587 seems to be a "one time" permit.
Grrr.

Susan,
I think you're making this more difficult than it needs to be. Form 587
will allow you to import any non-CITES protected plant from any
country....even ones not listed on your original form, and it is good for
several years. These will be delivered directly to your door via DHL, for
example....no need for extra couriers and expense. I talked to the people
at APHIS 3 separate times to make sure it was really this simple. Belive it
or not they answer the phone and even return calls!! I know, amazing for a
govt. agency, but true...cross my heart :o) I've only imported twice and
will place an order soon for another overseas shipment, but it has been
absolutely no problem at all on my 2 shipments....one small (50 tubers) and
one larger (140 tubers weighing 25 Kg). You'll have no problem....order
with impunity.
