Spathiphyllum 'Alfa'
|
From: Pieter Colpaert pieter_cactus at yahoo.co.uk> on 2003.11.14 at 08:25:00(10800)
Hello,
I'm new on this group. I am Pieter Colpaert from Belgium and I'm a
master student in bio-engineering.
For my thesis, I am working on the genetics for flower induction of
Spathiphyllum cv. 'Alfa'. And I am still looking for some additional
information on this plant to use in the introduction.
I do know that this is a hybrid between Spathiphyllum cv. 'Daniel' and
Spathiphyllum cv. 'Pallas'. But does someone here know what botanical
species these cultivars are made of? I think S. floribundum and S.
wallisii are among the ancestors. Am I correct? Or are there still
others involved?
Thanks,
Pieter

Peter: I suggest that you contact Ron Iles at roniles@eircom.net or Jake
Henny at RJHENNY@mail.ifas.ufl.edu They are the only ones likely to know
this taxon.

Hi Pieter!
Wouldn't it be good to know the parentages (pedigrees!!!!) of all these
wonderful modern Spathiphyllum hybrids? I hope to respond in serious fun
this week. You are in EUROPE. So have you living accommodation for >fifty
of the 45 or so Spathiphyllum "species"?
Cheers
Ron

May I add my 2 cents of scepticism in matters of cultivar parentage........
I think the quest for parentage in modern cultivars in hybrid complexes is a
futile excercise. Most of this kind of knowledge is part of the industrial
secret of companies who produce these CULTA, NOT TAXA, TOM CROAT!!........
:-), or did you forget my presentation in St. Louis some 7 years
ago...........?
| +More |
It will always be speculation as to what parentage is involved, unless e.g.
DNA-methods would unequivocally answer this question. But hybridisation also
brings perturbation of the genome and this may well blur the issue
definitively. Also, when older litarature on hybridisation is available, one
must always question to the correct use of names of parental species to the
point that species mentioned were often not even species themselves to begin
with (quite some Linnean species names do actually represent ancient
cultivars and are never found in the wild).
So, Ron and others, what is the drive behind this parentage quest? Pure
human inquisitiveness? Or does it have a purpose?
Cheerio,
Lord P.
