ah, wow, wee.. those are all words. All of my plants have happy names like
that & when people call them bad names they droop. They push out bad bad
labels with their roots at night & you find them miles away later. If they
don't like your name on the label they make it fade quick whatever ink or
pencil you use. Plants don't care what they are called? Well, I ask you!

How many times? Plants CARE!
Anyway, in a computer democracy, plants should have God numbers which go on
for ever not posh first names & surnames like 'umans, illogical.
Wilbert & friends your work is brill. I hate taxonomy

Am I being a fool or do others also not understand why good ol' Ron writes
such a mysterious quote to a taxonomist?

I think you are ANYTHING but a fool. my take on this statement when i read
it, is that for an amateur trying to keep up, taxonomy seems horribly
complex. So one is grateful somebody else does it because it is SUCH A JOB.
My husband who is actually quite fastidious about correct names, also
claims from time to time to hate taxonomists, even tho i have a cousin who
IS one. Anyway, this is how i interpreted the message when it first read it.
my great contribution to taxonomy is the removal of wrong labels.

Made sense to me, but I assumed by "hate taxonomy" he meant "hate the
ICBN" rather than taxonomists themselves or the work they do.
I have the highest regard for Wilbert, Tom, Peter, and all the other aroid
researchers - no one who has been around them at all will question their
incredible knowledge of aroids or plants in general. I don't question
their decisions about how closely things are related, either, even when I
(gently) harass them about the fallout.
On the other hand - as a complete amateur in botany but something of a
connoisseur of really badly designed data systems (having, unfortunately,
been exposed to so many!) - the ICBN is so very bad that I use it as an
example of how NOT to build systems. Few others provide so many
instructive bad features in one place.
