Dear Leland, The easiest is the –um ending, which is neuter; masculine end in –us; feminine end in –a. But beware there are pitfalls. The best-know are the so-called ‘Roman Trees’ – which are treated as feminine (as Romans did) but whose names don’t ‘agree’ – thus Quercus, Laurus, Fraxinus, Juniperus, Arbutus, etc. Peter From: aroid-l-bounces@www.gizmoworks.com [mailto:aroid-l-bounces@www.gizmoworks.com] On Behalf Of brian lee Sent: Friday, 27 January, 2012 1:11 AM To: Discussion of aroids Subject: Re: [Aroid-l] P. saxicolum Are there easy rules to determine gender in a name?

The same is true for Arum rupicola, Anthurium amnicola, etc.
