Dear Leland,

The easiest is the –um ending, which is neuter; masculine end in –us; feminine end in –a. But beware there are pitfalls. The best-know are the so-called ‘Roman Trees’ – which are treated as feminine (as Romans did) but whose names don’t ‘agree’ – thus Quercus, Laurus, Fraxinus, Juniperus, Arbutus, etc.

Dear Peter,

Aloha.

Are there easy rules to determine gender in a name?

Aloha,

Leland

Hi Enid,

All I can tell you is that it is Philodendron saxicola. and not saxicolum. -cola, the noun to dwell is here used in apposition (i.e., as an adjective) and doesn't agree with the gender of the genus. The same is true for Arum rupicola, Anthurium amnicola, etc.
