Re: [Aroid-l] Amorphophallus titanum bloom - Cockrell Butterfly

The results of this experiment will be very interesting to follow. I would have been very cautious about trying it since I would have thought ethylene is more likely to inhibit flowering then encourage it. An aging banana or apple certainly works in inducing flowering in bromeliads (and was the precursor of an ethylene (usually ethrel) treatment that is pretty standard commercial practice now to time a crop’s flowering), as many supermarkets who had the flower section next to the produce department found,  when their flowers aged and died prematurely.

Onward with science, and good luck Houston.

Aroiders,

I just came across this article (http://goo.gl/iaka) about using ripening bananas to help the bloom open and wanted to share. There is more info about the Center and the Bloom at http://goo.gl/bSA9. I searched recent emails from the list and don't see anything about this, but if I missed and am reposting, my apologies.

Best,
Robert
