ABSTRACT: Biological pest controls were implemented in the MBG Research Greenhouses in March 1990 to combat insects damaging the live research collections. Fifteen different plant families studied by MBG botanists are grown in three greenhouses that cover approximately 9,000 square feet. Previous to March 1990, insecticides were used to control these pests. The decision to begin using biological agents was made based on two factors: pests were becoming increasingly resistant to sprays, and the concern for the safety of greenhouse staff, botanists, and visiting guests of the Research Greenhouses.
