Chlorospatha of Antioquia (Colombia)
(Buy)
| | ABSTRACT: This paper treats all the species of Chlorospatha from the Department of Antioquia in Colombia. A total of 8 new species are described, all of which are endemic to Colombia. These are C. amalfiensis Croat & L. Hannon, C. antioquiensis Croat & L. Hannon, C. betancurii Croat & L. Hannon, C. callejasii Croat & L. Hannon, C. cogolloi Croat & L. Hannon, C. luteynii Croat & L. Hannon, C. macphersonii Croat & L. Hannon and C. nicolsonii Croat & L. Hannon. Four additional previously described taxa (3 species; 1 subspecies) occur in Antioquia, namely C. corrugata Bogner & Madison, C. gentryi Grayum, C. mirabilis (M. T. Masters) Madison, and C. croatiana Grayum ssp. enneaphylla Grayum, and are included in a key to the species in Antioquia.

Caring for Dormant Tuberous Aroids
(Buy)
| | ABSTRACT: The cultivation requirements for tuberous or geophytic aroids can be considered in two parts during a given year: the active above-ground growth of aerial parts and the below-ground dormancy of the rootstock. Most attention to this subject in the horticultural literature and in discussions involves the former; this article will focus on the rest period of these plants, mainly as this pertains to container cultivation. My experience in this plant category comes from over three decades of cultivating about 2000 different geophytes including numerous aroids. In growing these plants I have sought to find what will succeed in keeping them year to year rather than discovering an easier or more efficient methodology–a hobbyist rather than a commercial approach.

Species Profile: Philodendron patriciae Croat (Araceae)
(Buy)
| | ABSTRACT: In 1983, not far from Quibdo´ , near the R?´o Atrato, Dr. Croat found a patch of forest that was especially rich in aroids. After visiting the same place for two days he had by no means exhausted its potential for aroids of interest. This lightly forested area had been harvested, but not destroyed, by woodsmen in previous years, and here Dr. Croat found one of the most exciting aroids known from the Choco´ : an undescribed species of Philodendron. It remained ‘‘known’’ in the sense that its existence was recognized by a few people; many years would pass before it was formally described and published. The species was actually first collected by Dr. Alwyn Gentry and Enrique Reneteria in 1979 (no. 24115), but the specimen had remained unnamed in the herbarium. Closely associated with the progress towards being named was the successful introduction of this plant to cultivation and its subsequent propagation by seed.
