A new pedate-leaved species of Xanthosoma Schott (Araceae: Tribe Caladieae) with linear leaflets

| ABSTRACT: A new hairy species of Xanthosoma (X. pottii) with pedate leaves and linear leaflets from Southwestern Brazil (Pantanal region) is described and compared to its closest relative, X. plowmanii Bogner. It is the only helophytic species of the genus so far recorded with compound leaves and linear leaflets, although such features seem to be somewhat common in other species of Araceae inhabiting open marshy habitats in Brazil.

| ABSTRACT: Gearum brasiliense N. E. Br. was first collected in October 1828 by W. J. Burchell. N. E.Brown(1882) gave a very accurate description of the inflorescence and flower structure, although Burchell's specimen was heavily damaged by insect feeding, but until recently this monotypic genus remained incompletely known, due to lack of leaf material definitely attributable to Gearum. Although a second collection of Gearum was made by Burchell (Burchell 8598-leaves only), around the time ofthe holotype gathering, it was not until 150 years later that a third collection was made by Alfeu de Araujo Dias (Vias 41), a Brazilian botanist working for the Projeto RADAMBRASIL.

| ABSTRACT: An updated key for the genus Asterostigma is presented together with some considerations about the geographic distribution of the genus. A new Brazilian species of Asterostigma CA. lombardii) is also described and illustrated. It occurs in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais and probably Espfrito Santo and has a seasonally induced dormancy period. Asterostigma lombardii differs from its closest relative [A. riedelianum (Schott) o. Kuntze, from Bahia] mainly because of its boatshaped synandrodes formed by completely connate staminodes and acutely pointed stigma lobes.

| ABSTRACT: A new species of Anthurium (A. megapetiolatum E.G.Gonc.) from Serra do Cipo, Minas Gerais state, Southeastern Brazil is described and illustrated. It belongs to the section Urospadix Engl. and is tentatively included in the subsection 1nsculptinervia Eng!. because of its adaxially sunken primary lateral veins. Anthurium megapetiolatum is compared to other species in the subsection 1nsculptinervia.

| ABSTRACT: Anthurium xanthophylloides G. M. Barroso has been re-found in the wild for the first time since the type collection, in two different localities. An expanded description is presented, together with a detailed illustration. The species was initially considered as pertaining to section Cardiolonchium Schott, but it is now included in section Pachyneurium Schott here because of the involute ptyxis. Ecological and conservation remarks are provided.

| ABSTRACT: One of the most aesthetically desirable species in the genus Philodendron (P. spiritus-sancti G. S. Bunting), commonly known as Philodendron 'Santa Leopoldina' has been rediscovered in the wild in the forests of southeastern Espfrito Santo state, close to the town of Domingo Martins. The species is illustrated and a new description is furnished. Information on its ecology, as well as the conservation status of the species is presented. Philodendron spiritus-sancti is considered in serious danger of extinction because of its restricted range and limited regeneration in the wild.

| ABSTRACT: Six new taxa of Brazilian Araceae are here described and illustrated (Philodendron nullinervium E.G.Gonc.; Philodendron tenuispadix E.G.Gonc.; Taccarum crassispathum E.G.Gonc.; Xanthosoma acutum E.G.Gonc., Xanthosoma rotundatum E.G.Gonc. and Xanthosoma pulchrum E.G.Gonc.). Along with them, a new name (Philodendron humile E.G.Gonc.) is proposed for Homalomena solimoense G.M.Barroso, since this has proved to be a species of Philodendron, and simply transferring the epithet as a new combination in Philodendron is likely to lead to confusion with the pre-existing name Philodendron solimoesense A.C. Smith.

| ABSTRACT: Since it was described by Adolf Engler in 1880, the exact identity of the Brazilian Taccarum warmingii has remained obscure. Recently, the type material of this species was examined and a new collection was made in Espirito Santo state, Eastern BraziL Taccarum warmingii is described in details and illustrated, also based on living specimens now in cultivation. A revised key for the genus Taecarum is also presented.

| ABSTRACT: A new species of Asterostigma (A. reticulatum E.G.Gonc.) from Southern Brazil is described and illustrated. Two new Andean combinations are also presented. Spathantheum intermedium Bogner and Taccarum cardenasianum Bogner are transferred to the genus Gorgonidium as G. intermedium (Bogner) E.G.Gonc. and G. cardenasianum (Bogner) E.G.Gonc. respectively, and the arguments for both recombinations are presented.

A preliminary survey of gynoecium morphology in Xanthosoma (Araceae)

| ABSTRACT: The Neotropical genus Xanthosoma is an important source of food crops among aroid genera, but its taxonomy can be considered poorly resolved. In order to make a first approach to the morphological diversity in the genus, 14 species representing most of the range of morphologic variation were analyzed, considering gynoecium morphology and anatomy. Four different gynoecium types are here recognized and described. Presence and distribution of calcium oxalate crystals (druses and raphides), style morphology and arrangement of the anastomosing laticifers have proven to be the most important observed characters and are here suggested as useful taxonomic markers for the genus.

A revision of genus Dracontioides Engl. (Araceae)

| ABSTRACT: The genus Dracontioides was formerly considered monotypic with the only known species (D. desciscens (Schott) Eng!.) restricted to extreme eastern Brazil, growing as a helophytic herb. A second species for the genus (D. salvianii E.G. Gon~.) is here described, also from eastern Brazil (Bahia state). It is a psammophytic herb and a neotenic origin for this species is suggested. Since the last complete description of D. desciscens is the one included in the description of the genus, both species were described, illustrated and compared. Relationship of Dracontioides with genera considered closely related as Dracontium and Anapbyllopsis is discussed, as well as biogeographic and evolutionary trends within the genus Dracontioides and closely related genera.

| ABSTRACT: New evidence is presented to suggest that the monotypic genus Gearum (Araceae) may be truly cantharophilous, not myophilous as suggested before. The credible pollinators in Gearnm brasiliense are large scarab beetles of the species Cyclocepbala celata, which were collected inside floral chambers of inflorescences between the female and the male phases. Along with the direct observations of insects within inflorescences, general floral morphology and construction are used as indirect evidences of a cantharophily pollination syndrome in this aroid genus.

| ABSTRACT: A new species of Philodendron (P. lupinum) is described from Acre state, Brazil. It seems to be closer to the species of subgenus Philodendron section Philodendron series Impolita Croat (P. hebetatum, P. strictum and P. thalassicum), but differs from these species by the conspicuously panduriform anterior division and for the presence of fewer ovules per locule. This new species is so far known only from the type locality.

| ABSTRACT: The genus Xanthosoma Schott is widely cultivated in the tropics, but very little is known about its taxonomy, especially concerning the cultivated species. This article presents a key for determination, as well as morphological descriptions and additional information about 14 forms/ species of commonly cultivated Xanthosoma, including four new species. The species surveyed (and described) are: X. appendiculatum Schott, X. atrovirens C.Koch & Bouche, X. aureum E.G.Gon~., X. blandum Schott, X. brasiliense (Desf.) Flowering Amorphophallus titanum (Araceae) at Inhotim Botanical Garden - The First Blooming Event of this Species in Latin America

| ABSTRACT: The Asian species Amorphophallus titanum (Becc.) Becc. ex Arcang. can be considered one of the most spectacular flowering species ever cultivated and it is considered a real treasure for any Botanic Garden. Since its discovery in 1879, it has flowered approximately one hundred times in conservatories, but almost exclusively in Europe, North America and Asia. In December 2010, a ten years old (and 13 kg) tuber of Amorphophallus titanum flowered for the flrst time in Latin America, at the recently founded Jardim Botanico Inhotim. The inflorescence reached 1.78 m tall and the blooming event attracted approximately 1,500 people. The objective of this article is to describe the first flowering of this amazing species in Latin America and comment its social impact locally.

These new species are all illustrated and compared to their closest relatives. Caladium intermedium is noteworthy in appearing intermediate between Caladium and Scaphispatha, turning the boundaries between both genera rather complex.

The Living Aroid Collection at the Horto Botaˆnico of Universidade Cato´lica De Brası´lia (HBUCB) - Brazil

| ABSTRACT: The Horto Botaˆnico of Universidade Cato´ lica de Brası´lia (HBUCB) has been a centre for studies on aroids ever since it was established in 2004. In little over eight years it has amassed a comprehensive living aroid collection that now holds 53 genera and 317 species, many of which are only rarely cultivated (e.g. Scaphispatha, Philonotion, Lorenzia, Bognera). The collection also includes an important assemblage of at least 30 accessions that are clones of type material. The access to live specimens in a controlled environment facilitated research on molecular biology, chemical ecology, horticulture and conservation. This article aims to briefly present the Horto Botaˆnico of Universidade Cato´- lica de Brası´lia as a successful case of an active living plant collection in a developing country.

Elucidating Caladium tuberosum (S. Moore) Mayo & Bogner (Araceae)

| ABSTRACT: The monotypic genus Aphyllarum was erected in 1895 by Spencer Moore to accommodate a leafless aroid he collected in Mato Grosso state, Central-western Brazil. For more than 70 years the only species of the genus (A. tuberosum) was not recollected until an Anglo-Brazilian team of botanists finally found it in a second location. Although more information could be obtained from these new collections, fresh flowers were neither observed nor preserved, so important aspects of the floral morphology were still missing for a critical analysis of this elusive genus. In the last decade of the 20th Century, Aphyllarum was finally considered a synonym of Caladium Vent. but many lacunae on flower morphology were left unfilled owing the the lack of good flowering material. In 2006, living material of this species were collected and kept in cultivation for the first time, where it flowered and made possible a critical analysis of floral morphology, here described and illustrated. The presence of a coherent style was finally confirmed, but it seems to be essentially different of the morphology seen in Xanthosoma, and more similar to structures found in other recently described species of Caladium.

Two New Species of Dracontium (Araceae) from Northern Brazil

| ABSTRACT: The Neotropical genus Dracontium has been revised in 2004 and more than half of the known species have been described in the last eleven years. This article describes and illustrates two new Amazonian species: D. laetum E.G.Gonc¸. & S.P. Santos and D. narae E.G.Gonc¸. Both species are so far known from the type locality, but their putative rarity is probably an artifact caused by scanty collections.
